Smart plug vacation mode turns a plugged-in lamp on and off at random times so your home looks occupied while you’re away. It works best when you limit it to after dark and keep each lamp on its own plug. Left on defaults, some versions turn lights on in broad daylight, which is a giveaway.
How Smart Plug Vacation Mode Works
Brands use different names (Vacation mode, Away mode), but the idea is the same: you set a window, and the plug switches on and off at random inside it.
| Kasa (TP-Link) | Wyze | |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Away Mode | Vacation Mode |
| Randomizes on/off | Yes, within the window you set | Yes, per user reports |
| Start/end times | Custom time, sunrise, or sunset, with optional offset | A fixed window, per one user quoting Wyze’s support article: 6-9 AM and 6-11 PM |
| Pick your own days | Yes, via the repeat setting | Not confirmed |
Kasa’s setup is on the TP-Link support site: open the device, tap the Away icon, set a start and end time, then tap Start. The Wyze details come from a user in a community forum quoting a support article we couldn’t read ourselves, so treat that window as unverified. Neither source explains exactly how the randomness is calculated.
What Goes Wrong
Forum threads show the same complaints again and again, mostly about Wyze:
- Lights come on during the day. One user plugged a lamp into a Wyze Plug on Vacation mode and saw it turning on and off in the daytime. He called it a waste of energy that wouldn’t fool anyone.
- Grouped plugs switch together. Another user reported “one on, all on,” which defeats the point of random behavior and could make an empty house look odd.
- It can override your own rules. A user said vacation mode can turn a plug back on after a rule turned it off. Another replied that turning vacation mode off prevents this.
These are individual reports from community members, not Wyze statements, and the apps may change. But the lessons carry over to any brand: check the time window, don’t group plugs, and don’t stack features that fight each other.
A Setup That Looks Real
You can test this at home in a couple of evenings:
- Use one plug per lamp. Don’t put them in a group. Different lamps should come on at different times.
- Limit it to after dark. If your plug supports a sunset start, use it. Kasa’s Away Mode does. A lamp that comes on at 2 PM looks wrong.
- End at a believable hour. Something like 10 or 11 PM looks like a normal evening.
- Pick a lamp people actually use. A living room lamp is more convincing than a closet light.
- Watch it for two evenings before you leave. Look at the house from outside and check that nothing happens in daylight.
- Check your phone’s location settings. Kasa’s page says sunrise and sunset times sync to your region, so make sure the app has the right location.
A mechanical timer is a fair alternative: no app, no WiFi, and you control the hours. The tradeoff is that it repeats the same times every day, which is predictable. Forum users who prefer timers say they want exactly that control over the hours.
What About WiFi Outages?
If your WiFi drops while you’re gone, will the random mode keep running? We couldn’t confirm that for either brand. Our guide on whether smart plugs work without WiFi explains that fixed schedules stored on the plug can keep running offline, but we don’t know if a randomized mode behaves the same way. If it matters to you, run a test with your router unplugged for an evening.

Lights Aren’t the Whole Plan
SmarterTravel’s home-safety advice suggests using timers or smart plugs so lights turn on and off “as if someone were home.” It also recommends stopping your mail delivery or having a neighbor collect it, waiting to post trip photos until you’re back, and parking a car in the driveway if you have a garage. Lights help, but they’re one piece. Nothing makes a home burglar-proof, and we haven’t tested how well any mode deters anyone.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is smart plug vacation mode?
A feature that turns a plugged-in lamp on and off at random times within a window you set, so your home looks occupied while you’re away.
Does vacation mode turn lights on during the day?
Some users report it does on certain apps. Set a sunset start or a fixed evening window if your plug allows it, and test it before you leave.
Can I use vacation mode on several lamps?
Yes, but put each lamp on its own plug. Grouped plugs can switch together, which looks less natural.
Will vacation mode work if my WiFi goes down?
We couldn’t confirm that for any brand. Fixed schedules stored on a plug can keep running offline, but randomized modes may differ. Test yours.
Is a smart plug better than a mechanical timer for vacation?
A smart plug adds randomness and sunset timing. A mechanical timer needs no WiFi but repeats the same schedule every day.
