Comparing this (JQ818C) to the newer model (RD881)

4 Stars

Comparing this (JQ818C) to the newer model (RD881)
I purchased this model, JQ818C, for $140 and then immediately afterward noticed there was a "newer version", RD881, on sale–normally $160, but at $70 off, it was $90. So I ordered that too, to see which I liked better. This review compares the two models, with a specific focus on my desired use as a cheap home theater with an Amazon Fire stick streaming device.JQ818C is brighter, but bigger and with louder fan noise. Its ports are on the back, and controls are on top near the back. Keystone correction is rudimentary — seems like it just basically tilts the lens up/down a bit. If you're seeing a trapezoid where the top and bottom are parallel, you will be able to adjust that a little to make it more square. But if the sides are parallel instead, no adjustment is available, which means you need the projector to be aligned horizontally with the center of your screen.RD881 is noticeably dimmer, but also smaller and with a quieter fan. Its ports are on the right side, and controls are on top near the back. It has more advanced keystone correction, which means you don't have to have the projector aligned with the screen either vertically or horizontally. Unlike JQ818C, RD881 comes with an attractive grey padded carrying case. Both projectors have a nice crisp image for the price, and both allow some degree of zooming in to get the projection to fit your screen. Both have a small adjustable "foot" on the bottom in front to tilt the projection upward a few degrees if needed. Both can be mounted on table or ceiling. Both use the exact same remote — in fact, one remote turned on both machines when I didn't intend it to. They have significantly different UIs for settings, setup, etc. I liked the UI on RD881 better.Compatibility with fire stick:Both work fine with fire stick. If you have two Amazon Echo speakers, fire stick can be set to automatically pair with them, which results in easy, decent-quality stereo sound. Fire stick needs to be inserted into not only the HDMI port, but also into a USB port to supply it with power. Some USB ports on TVs/projectors don't provide enough power for the stick to work, in which case you need to plug the USB end into AC power (wall outlet). This is true for JQ818C but NOT for RD881. I.E. Fire stick can use RD881's USB for its power, but with JQ818C, it has to plug in to the wall. Supposedly Amazon makes a special USB cord to address this situation. I have one pending delivery so will update this review with info on whether that resolves the issue.Since RD881's ports are on the side, it stays with a nice short depth, so it sticks out less if you mount it on the wall. With the firestick plugged in to the side port, total *width* including the stick becomes about 12".Since JQ818C's ports are in back, the depth gets longer with the firestick in, for a total *depth* of about 12" including the stick.I am leaning heavily toward JQ818C because of the better brightness in a not-all-the-way-dark room. I plan to mount it from the ceiling but haven't done so yet. If the picture is still good from that angle, JQ818C will be the winner for my needs.UPDATES: the special fire stick USB cable did successfully get enough power out of the USB on the JQ818C. Here's a link to that cable: when I mounted the JQ818C up as high as I needed it, the downward angle meant the image couldn't be fully focused (either the top half of the image was in focus or the bottom half, but never both). This was a deal breaker so I settled for the dimmer, but otherwise great (and correctly focused) RD882.

What can I say? It’s amazing, works well gives a movie theatre vibe. My girlfriend and me use this a lot for movie dates. It’s a game changer, speaking of games I’ve connect my PS5 and even my phone through screen mirroring (mobile games are amazing now). The built in speakers are decent, but that’s expected and I recommend getting a sound bar or giant Bluetooth speaker for the sound if you want nice sound quality. The picture is actually amazing, like realistically speaking for a projector of this type I have 0 complaints and I believe they did a fantastic job. In my opinion this is the best budget projector you can buy, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

I purchased this projector in November of 2022 and was immediately impressed with the ease of setup and quality of picture. My son loves the clarity of the 100″ screen for gaming!
Fast forward to last week when a big orange circle was screen burn appeared…I had one unhappy gamer. I reached out to Groview to inquire about the 2-year warranty and they quickly responded. I sent them a picture of the issue and had a replacement on my doorstep within a couple of days!
My little guy is back to gaming and Groview has gained a customer for life!

I’ve used this projector a few times now using different devices for video viewing. I’ve connected a gaming console, a blu ray player, and a laptop. Each time I used the projector outside with a 20 foot (13ft W X 8ft H) inflatable screen (Khomo Gear 20ft screen). The image is absolutely great for each of these things. This projector is fully capable of handling such a large screen perfectly. The 1 reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because each time I’ve tried to use the audio out or even the bluetooth option to connect a powered speaker for audio, the sound is just too quiet for outdoors. For whatever reason, the audio output coming from the project is too low, even with a powered speaker (a full stereo, not a weak, little bluetooth speaker). My solution was to go straight from the video device to the stereo for audio and just use the projector for video. If you are indoors, using a wall, or mounted projector screen, you should be fine. However, if, like me, you decide to use an inflatable screen with a quiet blower and plenty of ambient outside noise (cars driving by, crickets, etc.), make sure to have good speakers and possibly an amplifier. My solution was to use my laptop. My laptop would connect to the stereo while I would use the projector as an external monitor. Problem solved. Except.. you need either a bluray or dvd drive and the necessary media player program. Or, you need to be able to use an audio output directly from your bluray player. Otherwise, I am super happy with this projector and will continue to use it for outdoor movies and other fun family events.

I never leave reviews but this needs 1. I was looking for a projector and nobody gave me info on what I needed so here it goes:
1. It can clearly be made to fit full 100 inches (you need a dark room and patient to adjust it correctly)
2. Buy a floating shelf if you are putting it somewhere for longer periods of time (if it’s moved a few inches you have to readjust)
3. The picture quality is amazing. You have to adjust for what you are watching… horror, anime, cooking, etc (please adjust brightness, contrast and etc)
4. It does not Screencast very well with older devices. I have DeX and it works great. That said you can download a good app for screensharing.
5. Did not have to buy a speaker. I actually have to turn it down at night. (If you want big bass then yes you’ll need a speaker.
I love this projector and will buy and future ones because it’s amazing. Lighter than a tv, can move, go on trips with me. AND ITS AMAZING FOR ANIME. watched 100 episodes of One piece in a night because of this projector.

I did a lot of research on these lower cost projectors and I finally decided on this Groview 15000 lumen projector. I was skeptical because of the research I did. I wasn’t expecting it to be very bright. However it is brighter than expected. I did also purchase a 100 inch screen that provides a 1. 1 lumens gain. But the screen is bright enough to clearly see the screen in the daytime and also with lights on at night. Now of course if you want to watch a movie it’s going to be best in an almost dark room, but I didn’t expect it to be that bright in the daytime. I would recommend if you are going to get this also get a screen that provides a brightness gain. Now a couple of things I’m not crazy about. The fine tuning on the brightness and contrast are not great. I often feel to provide a good contrast ratio the picture looks too bright and washes out some detail. It just depends on the source and the movie. I also don’t like the miricast feature or the airplay option, because airplay doesn’t work with streaming services or even your own movies in a digital library like vudu. These do work if you are using an android phone but still clunky. Also there is no way to cast audio to my Sonos Arc if using miricast or airplay. This is because there is no hdmi arc/eArc support. If you are trying to get audio back to a Sonos system, you will need an atmos audio extractor and a 2 way hdmi splitter if you want to also run video back to a TV in the same room for regular every day viewing. They also make it look like there is a way to correct keystone horizontal and vertical, but it’s vertical only. This was just my first entry into projectors. Once I have a dedicated room for my theater I will be upgrading to a expensive native 4k projector. But for the price point this is a great entry level projector. Now we will see how long it works without issues. The pictures above were taken after installation with a ceiling mount. They were taken with some lights on in the room.

This is not a toy!

Reviewed in Canada on February 12, 2024

I used to have a home theater setup about 15 years ago, wasn’t really using anymore and got rid of everything when I moved in to my new house! Kind’a gettin’ the itch again… but did not want to spend a couple of grand on it. It would be for occasional movie watching in a light controlled basement living room.
So I figured based on reviews and several youtube videos I would give this one a try!
First of all, manage your expectations!! this is not a 3000$ 4k laser projector, nor does it try to be! I used to have a panasonic PT-AE700 (2500$ back in the day) wich was 1000 lumens and 720p. What you get with this little magic box is amazing… resolution is great and it’s really bright in a dark room. Doesn’t feel quite as bright as my old projector but the bump in resolution is instantly noticable and the overall image is better.
The good:
– Only 150$ on special with coupon… OMG!!! Less expensive that a new buld for my old projector!!
– Great picture quality, brightness, resoluton and color accuaracy (Mind bogglingly good for the price!!) This rivals projectors in a much higher price range!
– Connectivity is good 2xHdmi, 2xUSB, A/V and Bluetooth
– Built in speaker is actually usable, pretty lound and sounds ok for poratbility.
– Remote control is well made and usefull.
– Great brightness up to 100″-120″
– Easy and usefull setup menu.
The less good:
– For absolutely perfect focus, projector lens must be perfectly centered with the screen, there is no throw angle built in. So you must use the manual keystone ajustement, I does work but the more you angle the projector with the screen, the less in focus the top and bottom of the picture will be. So you have to compromise a little bit between sharpness and squareness of the picture. So table top and ceilling mounting will be top/bottom blurry if the throw angle is to strong. More obvious with text and less in a movie.
– Fan is definitely audible in quiet situations, but with movie sound you don’t hear it.
– No optical zoom, so throw distance is fixed! 8’4″ for an 80″ screen in my setup, you can use digital zoom down to 50% for further distance, but that reduces resolution and overall brightness.
– Does not have a 1/4″ tripod mount hole, only 4 screw projector mount. (would of been nice)
– Not really usable in a lighted room, very dim lighting for bright stuff like sporting events is doable!
Got a VIVO 80″ pull down screen for 100$ on special!
Now have a home theater setup for less that 300$ total!!
Unbeleivable value!!

The best budget projector I’ve tried so far

Reviewed in Canada on December 14, 2023

This is my third portable/mini projector and is the best out of all three I have tried.
The good
– Incredible picture quality, brightness and contrast for the price
– Using auto focus and keystone actually work well with one another. Other projectors will lose focus if you do any keystone adjustments. This does not and text remains sharp and clear
– Simple to use and easy to setup
The not so good
– It definitely is louder (fan noise) than the other two projectors I’ve tried in this price range. However, mine sits right beside me so it may not be an issue for you if you have better placement
– Built in speaker is below average, definitely connect a Bluetooth speaker to get better sound
Overall
This seems to be the best but the issue with most projectors in this budget category, time will tell if they last. Dust seems to get inside easily as well, causing black spots on the screen. I haven’t experienced any yet (only been a few days). If I see any, I will try to clean them with a cotton swab and see if it works, and will update this review with my experience doing so
Until then, I can definitely recommend this projector, incredible value for the price
